Rules & Format

The official rules governing all Lancaster Scholastic Chess League matches, playoffs, and conduct.

๐Ÿ“‹

Rule 1โ€“3

Match Format

โ€”
Boards: Each match is decided by the results of the top 5 boards. An advisor must be present for home and away matches.
โ€”
Start time: Play begins at 4:00 PM. Late players' clocks may be started at 4:00.
โ€”
Time control: 75 minutes per player in the regular season; 90 minutes in playoffs.
โ€”
Colors: Visiting team has white on odd-numbered boards (1, 3, 5).
โ€”
Minimum players: Fewer than 5 players = forfeit per missing board. Fewer than 3 players = full match forfeit, no games played.
โ€”
Postponements: Allowed for weather, school closing, eve of finals, or advisor absence โ€” notify the opposing team.
๐Ÿ—‚

Rule 5โ€“6

Board Lineup & Ratings

โ€”
Rating system: Board order is set by LSCL ratings (not USCF) โ€” best player on board 1, second-best on board 2, etc.
โ€”
Season start: Initial order comes from a preseason team tournament, or advisor ranking if no tournament was held.
โ€”
Coach adjustment: Advisors may shift players up or down one board from their rated position if the list doesn't reflect current ability.
โ€”
Protests: Lineup disputes must be raised before play begins. Playing out of order costs one forfeit point per board misplaced.
โ€”
Results: The home team advisor reports match results to the secretary within 24 hours.
๐ŸŽ“

Rule 4

Eligibility & Roster

โ€”
Enrollment: Players must be bona fide students of the school they represent. No guest players.
โ€”
Roster: Advisors submit team rosters to the secretary before the season begins.
โ€”
Top boards: Boards 1โ€“3 require at least four prior rated LSCL matches, unless the team doesn't have three such players.
๐Ÿ“Š

Rule 7

Scoring & Standings

Win 1 pt Per match won
Draw ยฝ pt Per match drawn
Loss 0 pts Per match lost
โ€”
Match result: Most board points wins. Equal board points = a draw.
โ€”
Dropped teams: Results against a team that withdraws don't count in standings, but do count for individual ratings.

Logistics

Transportation FAQ

Transportation is the responsibility of each individual school. The league does not provide or coordinate transportation. Most schools arrange carpools through the coach or school administration.

Each match is hosted by a designated member school. The host school provides the playing space and supervision. Locations rotate across member schools throughout the season โ€” check the Schedule page for each round's host school and address.

Matches begin at 4:00 PM. Teams should arrive a few minutes early to allow time for check-in and board assignment submission before play begins. Clocks of late players may be started at 4:00 per the rules.

Yes, parents and family members are welcome to observe. However, spectators must remain quiet and may not offer any coaching or advice to players while games are in progress. The host school may designate a specific spectator area.

A match can be postponed for inclement weather, school closing, the evening before final exams, or the advisor's absence from school. The opposing team must be notified as early as possible. Rescheduling is handled at the coordinator's discretion.

There is no per-match fee for players or spectators. Annual league dues of $150 per school are arranged between the league and each school's administration at the start of the season, due by January 15.
